Stephen Rea has played major roles in more than forty films, including The Crying Game (1992), The Mission (1986), Dancing at Lughnasa (1996), Michael Collins (1996) and The Crying Game (1992). He was born in County Westmeath, Ireland, and moved to Manchester, England with his family as a child. He attended Radley College and studied drama at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In 1991 he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an Irish gangster in My Left Foot. In 1996 he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor for his role as a Jewish Holocaust survivor in Dancing at Lughnasa. He also appeared as a priest in the film Shadowlands, playing the romantic lead opposite Kate Winslet
For his work on Dancing at Lughnasa he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. In 2012 he completed filming on the Stephen Rea-directed Irish film, Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd about Irish priests working during the Great Famine. He is married with four children including his son who plays guitar and sings, Connor Rea.
